Blue-Mobility and Comate: Innovation in Sustainable Mobility for Leuven

Leuven is known as a pioneer in shared mobility, the circular economy, and innovation. It’s no surprise that Blue-Mobility chose this city to be the first to expand their fleet with circular e-bikes. Thanks to the new back-to-many system, you can easily combine your e-bike ride with public transport or carpooling, as you can drop off the e-bike at any Blue-bike location without additional costs. This makes it easier than ever to integrate cycling into your journey with public transport or carpooling. The electric Blue-bikes were developed in together with the Leuven-based engineering firm, Comate.

The well-known blue shared bikes, Blue-bike, which you can find at stations and throughout the city, were until recently only available as standard bikes. However, in December of last year, Blue-Mobility launched a pilot project with 15 circular electric bikes at Leuven station. This pilot was a resounding success. As a result, the fleet is now expanding to 56 e-bikes, which will be available at various locations, including the Haasrode UCLL bus stop, Hoppinpunt Vaartkom, and Heverlee Science Park. Thanks to these circular e-bikes, standard bikes converted to e-bikes by the local Belgian company MoCyclette, you get an extra (electric) push, allowing you to reach your destination faster and more comfortably.

Along with the expansion of the electric fleet, Blue-Mobility is also launching a back-to-many system. This system allows you to pick up an e-bike and drop it off at another e-bike location in Leuven without any extra costs. This gives users the freedom to combine their ride with other forms of transport, such as the bus or carpooling, contributing significantly to the modal shift towards more sustainable mobility.

Innovation in Leuven

The Leuven-based engineering firm Comate, specializing in hardware development, was involved in the electrification of the bikes. “Circularity, repairability, and compatibility with the existing fleet were key parameters for us in the development of the e-bikes,” says Jasper Strobbe of Blue-Mobility. “We wanted a partner who could integrate these aspects into a new design and deliver it on a tight deadline for the launch. With an eye on circularity, we wanted to maximize the use of our current fleet as a resource. The design had to be compatible with this, so that materials could be interchangeable for repairs or for the conversion and electrification of existing standard bikes. Additionally, it was crucial that all repairs or conversions could be carried out as efficiently and simply as possible by our other partners, such as VELO vzw.”

In addition to the collaboration with Comate, the project also contributes to the social economy in Leuven. VELO vzw, an organization that provides work experience and employment to various groups in society who have difficulty accessing the labor market, handles the maintenance and repairs. “Our employees have the opportunity to build unique expertise that will be highly valuable in the future,” says Dries Janssen, director of VELO vzw.

Launch of the E-bike System in Leuven on August 29

Leuven is the first city where Blue-Mobility is introducing the new e-bike system, with the official launch on August 29. This move once again positions the city as a leader in smart, environmentally friendly solutions and contributes to the ambition of promoting shared mobility and making Leuven even more bike-friendly.

“Thanks to the collaboration with the City of Leuven, Comate, and VELO vzw, we were able to quickly realize our e-bikes and the back-to-many system,” says Jasper Strobbe. “We’re proud of this milestone. Mission accomplished!”

Leuven staat bekend als pionier op het gebied van deelmobiliteit, circulaire economie en innovatie. Het is dan ook geen verrassing dat Blue-Mobility ervoor heeft gekozen om juist in deze stad als eerste hun vloot uit te breiden met circulaire e-bikes. Dankzij het nieuwe back-to-many systeem voor de e-bikes kan je eenvoudig combineren met het openbaar vervoer of carpool door de e-bike kosteloos op een andere Blue-bike locatie achter te laten. Dit vereenvoudigt het om je fietsrit te combineren met het openbaar vervoer of carpool. De elektrische Blue-bikes zijn mede ontwikkeld door het Leuvense ingenieursbureau Comate.

De bekende blauwe deelfietsen, Blue-bike, die je op stations en door de stad verspreid ziet, waren tot voor kort enkel beschikbaar als reguliere fiets. In december vorig jaar lanceerde Blue-Mobility echter een pilootproject met 15 circulaire, elektrische fietsen aan het station van Leuven. Dit bleek een schot in de roos. Het succes van deze pilot zorgt nu voor een uitbreiding naar 56 e-bikes, die beschikbaar zullen zijn op verschillende locaties, waaronder de bushalte Haasrode UCLL, Hoppinpunt Vaartkom en Heverlee Wetenschapspark. Dankzij deze circulaire e-bikes, reguliere fietsen die omgebouwd werden door het lokale Belgische bedrijf MoCyclette, krijg je een (elektrisch) duwtje in de rug, waardoor je nog sneller en comfortabeler je bestemming kan bereiken.

Samen met de uitbreiding van de elektrische vloot, lanceert Blue-Mobility nu ook een back-to-many systeem. Dit maakt het mogelijk om een e-bike op te halen en zonder extra kosten op een andere e-bike locatie in Leuven achter te laten. Dit geeft gebruikers de vrijheid om hun rit te combineren met andere vormen van vervoer, zoals de bus of carpoolen, wat fundamenteel bijdraagt aan de modale shift naar duurzamere mobiliteit.

Leuvense innovatie

Het Leuvense ingenieursbureau Comate, gespecialiseerd in hardware ontwikkelingen, werkte mee aan de elektrificatie van de fietsen. “Circulariteit, herstelbaarheid en compatibiliteit met de bestaande vloot waren voor ons belangrijke parameters in de ontwikkeling van de e-bikes”, zegt Jasper Strobbe van Blue-Mobility. “Wij zochten een partner die deze zaken kon integreren in een nieuw ontwerp en opleveren tegen een strakke deadline voor de lancering. Met het oog op circulariteit willen we onze huidige vloot maximaal benutten als grondstof. Het ontwerp moest hiermee dan ook compatibel zijn, zodat materiaal uitwisselbaar is voor herstellingen of ombouw en elektrificatie van de bestaande reguliere fietsen. Verder is het van groot belang dat alle herstellingen of ombouw zo efficiënt en eenvoudig mogelijk uitgevoerd moeten kunnen worden door onze andere partners zoals VELO vzw.”

Naast de samenwerking met het Leuvense Comate, draagt het project dus ook bij aan de sociale economie in Leuven. VELO vzw, een organisatie die mensen werkervaring en tewerkstelling biedt aan diverse groepen uit de samenleving die moeilijk toegang hebben tot de arbeidsmarkt, neemt het onderhoud en de herstellingen op zich. “Onze medewerkers krijgen de kans om unieke expertise op te bouwen die in de toekomst nog zeer waardevol zal zijn”, aldus Dries Janssen, directeur van VELO vzw.

Lancering van het e-bike systeem in Leuven op 29 augustus

Leuven is de eerste stad waar Blue-Mobility het nieuwe systeem met e-bikes introduceert met de officiële launch op 29 augustus. De stad zet zich hiermee wederom op de kaart als een voorloper in slimme, milieuvriendelijke oplossingen en draagt bij aan de ambitie om deelmobiliteit te promoten en Leuven nog fietsvriendelijker te maken.

“Dankzij de samenwerking met Stad Leuven, Comate en VELO vzw konden we onze e-bikes en het back-to-many systeem snel realiseren,” zegt Jasper Strobbe. “We zijn trots op deze mijlpaal. Missie geslaagd!”
